Canon City is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Colorado Springs and is about 12 miles west of Pueblo, Colorado. Its unique geography and 5,300 foot elevation protects the city from harsh weather conditions. The population was 16,000 in 2005.
Buckskin Joe is a Western-style theme park and railway 8 miles (13 km) west of Canon City where you'll find gun fights, 30 authentic buildings from the Colorado 1800's frontier, themed entertainment, a full service saloon and restaurant. Also, there is a Mystery House and a horse-drawn trolley ride. Another attraction is the Royal Gorge Bridge which hangs 1,053 feet (321 m) above the Arkansas River, and is known as the highest suspension bridge in the world. Whitewater rafting and rock climbing are popular activities in the area. You can also take a ride on the Royal Gorge Route Railroad which departs daily for a 2-hour scenic and historic train ride through the Royal Gorge.
